Clients of the Rehabilitation Centre for Children (RCC) and their families enjoyed a special afternoon at the SSCY Centre, where they had the chance to meet former Winnipeg Blue Bombers linebacker Adam Bighill.
Thanks to a connection with CIBC, an introduction between the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation (CRF) and Adam Bighill was formed allowing CRF to organize this memorable event, filled with fun, connection and storytelling.
“CIBC visited SSCY Centre last year, and we were impressed by the work being done here,” said Erin Dupuis, VP and Region Head, CIBC Commercial Banking. “When the opportunity arose to make this connection, we immediately thought of this organization.”
CRF places a strong emphasis on creating meaningful experiences for clients and their families, particularly since children living with varying abilities often face barriers to attending live sporting events. Factors like limited accessible seating and overwhelming sensory stimuli—such as loud noises and large crowds—can make it difficult for them to fully enjoy the experience.
For RCC client Gabriel Townsend, meeting Bighill was a dream come true.
“I love the bombers so much,” RCC client Gabriel said excitedly. “It’s so amazing because I was thinking about this all week and woke up happy today. So incredible to meet my favourite guys.”
Bighill, who values giving back to the community, was more than happy to be part of the event.
“I try to give back as much as I can, and when opportunities like this come up, it’s hard to say no,” he shared. “The kids truly inspire me. They face challenges, but they’re living their best lives. It’s a reminder they’re doing just fine.”
For Gabriel’s father, Neil, the event was especially meaningful.
“Gabriel is a huge sports fan, and Adam Bighill is one of his favourites,” he said. “Without today’s invitation to RCC, we wouldn’t have had this chance to meet him in such a supportive environment.”
