Augmentive and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Overview

Our team collaborates with school staff and families to assist children in reaching their communication goals. The AAC program serves children and youth up to 18 years old with unmet physical access and communication needs.

What To Expect During Your Visit

Please visit the front reception desk at SSCY Centre, they will assist you with check-in. The AAC team will review your child’s history and current communication approaches with you. Assessments are typically 1-2 hours long. We encourage you to bring your child’s team members and any communication systems you have been using.

Meet Your Team

The AAC Team is made up of an Occupational Therapist, a Speech Language Pathologist and an Electronics Engineer. They will conduct an assessment of current language abilities and access needs, and provide a report detailing their findings and recommendations for next steps with AAC. This report will include goals for communication and access to be implemented at home and in school, developed in collaboration with the school team. If a communication device is needed, our team will assist in identifying the appropriate device, obtaining it, and teach your child how to use it. Follow up appointments will be arranged after receiving the communication system.

How To Access The Program

We ask that the Referral Form be completed by an Speech Language Pathologist or Occupational Therapist familiar with the child’s current communication abilities.
