Stepping Out on Saturdays (SOS)

The Manitoba Stepping Out on Saturdays Program (aka “SOS Camp”) is a once-per-month therapeutic recreation program for children ages 5-12 years old with a diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) or who are on the waitlist for assessment with the Manitoba FASD Centre. Priority is given to children in care or supported by a child welfare agency.

Overview

The motto of the SOS Program is “Friendships Start Here”. The SOS Program takes place once a month on Saturdays and is crafted to provide children with a enjoyable day within a supportive setting. Here, they can engage in play, learning, and honing friendship skills while acquiring techniques for self-regulation. Trained staff, and a low supervision ratio, are key to a successful day. Tailored plans are crafted to support each child within the SOS program, honouring their individuality by acknowledging their unique gifts and strengths. The program is currently offered in five Manitoba locations: Bloodvein, Brandon, Selkirk, Thompson, and Winnipeg.

There is an SOS Facilitator at each location who plans and delivers the program and trained Support Workers who provide supervision at a 1:3 ratio. A Provincial Coordinator oversees and supports all five Manitoba locations.
